Day 1:
This CP University includes eight hours of courses on concrete pipe design. Attendees will begin by learning Indirect Design and the influence of installation types and conditions on the requirements for a D-load specified pipe. Live load applications to the soil surface above the pipe, and the theories regarding their distribution through soil down to the pipe, will be discussed, with particular emphasis on AASHTO highway loads. The installation and loading concepts will be evaluated using the computer software program PipePac. You will learn how to develop a fill height table in accordance with AASHTO through the use of PipePac by the end of the first afternoon.
Day 2:
The following afternoon, the AASHTO Direct Design method applied to concrete pipe conditions that require pipe not included in the ASTM C 76 D-load tables will be discussed. With a basic understanding of the Direct Design Method, attendees will follow a PIPECAR software demonstration that tremendously reduces the amount of time required to perform one of these calculations. Finally, many agencies are revising their specified design methods and accompanying fill height tables but are unsure of which approach, Indirect Design or Direct Design is preferable. The benefits and limitations of the two methods will be compared against each other to allow you to more capably act as a source of information to the customers/specifiers that you deal with.
Attendees may bring their computers to follow along with the software demonstrations, but it is not required.
